Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is the tank farm operating contractor at the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 56 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated organization engineering organization. Engineering at WRPS consists of process engineering, design engineering, nuclear safety, plant/system engineering, construction project engineering, procurement engineering, process and control system engineering, engineering standards/program implementation, and the Chief Technology Office. These areas support all areas of the tank farm mission including Retrievals, Production Operations, Field Projects, Waste Feed Delivery Projects, and long term innovations.

Production Operations Engineering provides a variety of engineering services in support of the operation and maintenance of TOC facilities and ensuring proper implementation of engineering requirements, including: developing inputs, assumptions and design criteria for tank farm facility modifications; administrating the System Engineering program and providing Cognizant System Engineering (CSE) and Shift Technical Engineer (STE) support to facilities; providing resident waste transfer and characterization technical expertise and facility knowledge in support of operability determinations, performance monitoring program, centralized resolution of Structures, Systems, and Components (SSC) performance problems; and providing Maintenance Engineering support.

WRPS is seeking mechanical engineers responsible for providing engineering support to the 242-A Evaporator facility and the 242A-BA Boiler Annex directly supporting the Tank Farm Operations Contract (TOC) and WRPS Engineering. Duties of the mechanical engineer will typically include design, analysis, testing, fabrication, control, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of mechanical systems

The specific engineering duties will include the following:

  • The specific engineering duties will include the following:

  • Obtain and maintain engineering Technical Staff qualification and then Design Authority qualification for assigned systems;

  • Assume responsibility for the mechanical system aspects of specific projects/scope including design, application, test, or the preparation of specifications for systems, materials, equipment or components in collaboration with other engineering/science competencies within the team.

  • Prepare technical manuals, reports, procedures and deliver technical presentations to engineering, operations, projects, and customer organizations.

  • Conduct site/area visits and investigate engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives and provide recommendations.

  • Define and maintain TOC System technical baseline documents and design change documents;

  • Monitor and trend system performance and reliability, conduct field walk downs, prepare, and present System Status Reports on routine intervals, participate in Plant Health Committees to support health reporting and corrective actions assigned system;

  • Make technically defendable, decisions on engineering issues, and represent the WRPS Engineering organization in meetings with other company organizations and/or with the client and other stakeholders;

  • Develop specifications, perform and/or review calculations, development/review technical and operability evaluations, and perform design reviews;

  • Monitor and support ongoing operations and activities;

  • Input, develop and approve (as necessary) system related work packages, and operating procedures;

  • Review and approve new operating or maintenance procedures or changes to existing operating or maintenance procedures;

  • Review and approve requirements for preventive maintenance, surveillances, and establish post maintenance testing;

  • Maintain working knowledge of the documented safety analysis and environmental permits;

  • Sustain productive and positive customer relationships;

Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures.

  • Demonstrate creative ability through the ingenuity exercised in solving technical problems or preparation and presentation of technical papers, articles, talks or patent disclosures.

  • Demonstrates problem solving skills in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.

  • Ensure compliance with technical requirements of assigned work, proper utilization and training of personnel operating under one's technical guidance, and compliance with approved schedules and staffing estimates. Ensures appropriate technical performance of the end product developed and designed to resolve the original problem.

  • Ability to execute tasks with minimal oversight

  • Ability to solve highly technical problems

  • May lead projects or teams

Required Qualifications

Grade 19:

Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; with

Nine (9) years related experience

Grade 20:

Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; with

Ten (10) years related experience

Compensation & Benefits

Grade 19:

Hiring Range Minimum: $114,475

Hiring Range Maximum: $144,325

Grade 20:

Hiring Range Minimum: $126,025

Hiring Range Maximum: $158,875

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
